Aviation security system in the Republic of Serbia at EU level

Aviation security system in the Republic of Serbia at EU level

The European Commission published in EU Official Journal L021 of 27 January 2020, EU Implementing Regulation No 111/2020, acknowledging the Republic of Serbia being compliant with the aviation security standards, which are equivalent to the common basic standards of aviation security applicable at airports in the Member States of the European Union.

Following direct onsite audit conducted by the EU expert team in October 2018 and after the approval of the implemented procedures, the European Commission has taken a positive decision upon the request from the Republic of Serbia for the recognition of the equivalence of security measures.

The European Commission has recognized that the aviation security system in the Republic of Serbia is in place and operates in the same way as in the EU Member States, as well as that the aviation security measures implemented at Nikola Tesla Airport, Belgrade are at the same level as at EU airports.

This is the first step towards facilitating the flow of passengers, baggage, cargo and mail from Nikola Tesla Airport, which will benefit passengers, Air SERBIA national air carrier, aerodrome operator at Belgrade Airport and aviation industry as a whole. This practically means that passengers, their cabin and hold baggage, cargo and mail departing from Nikola Tesla Airport and landing at aerodromes in the territory of the EU will not be subjected to repeated security controls when in transfer from such airports. The same applies to passengers arriving from EU airports to Nikola Tesla airport and continuing their journey to other destinations.

The European Commission's confirmation that the security system is the same as in the EU states is a clear indication of the successful implementation of the EU standards and regulations in the Republic of Serbia. This great success is the result of the cooperation between the Civil Aviation Directorate with all competent national authorities and aviation entities in charge of implementing aviation security measures.
